A huge thank you to Mai Suzuki for leading today’s Posture & Muscle Workshop, where we had the opportunity to explore the essential elements of body alignment, safe dancing, and muscle activation. As a former professional ballerina, Mai brought a deep understanding of the dancer’s body and an incredible wealth of knowledge, which made the session both insightful and impactful for everyone involved.
The workshop centered around the Shisei Method, a Japanese technique that emphasises achieving optimal body alignment to ensure both strength and fluidity in movement. Mai expertly guided us through the principles of posture and alignment, showing us how small adjustments can have a powerful impact on muscle engagement, balance, and overall performance. This method was particularly valuable for dancers, as it helps reduce the risk of injury while enhancing control, precision, and flexibility. Shisei is based on the concept of aligning the body in a way that enhances natural movement, reduces strain, and promotes long-term health and sustainability for dancers. Throughout the workshop, Mai emphasized the importance of achieving perfect posture—how even slight changes in alignment can improve balance and control. She showed us how maintaining proper alignment not only improves the quality of movement but also helps to distribute the body’s weight more evenly, which can prevent common dance injuries caused by overcompensation in certain areas.
In addition to body alignment, Mai focused on safe dancing, teaching us how to protect our bodies through conscious muscle engagement and mindful movement. We learned how to build strength in the key muscle groups while maintaining flexibility, ensuring that we dance in a way that is both effective and sustainable over time. Mai’s emphasis on listening to our bodies and respecting our physical limits was a crucial reminder of the importance of long-term health and injury prevention.
The workshop concluded with a Tension Release segment, where Mai led us through simple yet incredibly effective exercises to release tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and lower back—areas that often accumulate stress during dance training. These exercises helped us relax and reset, allowing us to feel more open and fluid in our movement.
Massage, Condition, Strengthen!
A heartfelt thank you to Mai Suzuki, whose expertise and thoughtful guidance helped us build a strong foundation for safe, injury-free, and more efficient dancing. We are excited to apply the Shisei Method, the posture techniques, and the tension release strategies to our practice, and we look forward to dancing with greater alignment, strength, and freedom moving forward. 🌟💪
