FOUNDATION IN DANCE I & II

Our Foundation in Dance I & II course is suitable for young children ages 3 and up. The course enhances physical development and stimulate creativity in young children, using movement exploration and basic dance techniques: ballet, modern and jazz as the fundamental skills.

The course is created in a way that it allows young children to learn, while at the same time enjoy dance through imagery, music, story-telling and various props. 

At the end of the course, children will have better sense of self-esteem, body awareness and the ability to communicate effectively with others.

The Syllabi:

  • Foundation Level (Foundation I & II for age 3-5)  Enhance body coordination, spatial and movement exploration, develop musicality, and encourage self-expression

CLASSICAL BALLET

Classical Ballet is known for its graceful and ethereal qualities. Some famous Classical Ballets are The Sleeping Beauty, Paquita, Nutcracker, Giselle, Coppélia, Don Quixote and Swan Lake.

The traditional and formal style of ballet includes a well-structured, strict and meticulous technique like pointe work, turnout and high extensions. It also provides the basic foundation for many other kinds of dance. 

Classical Ballet classes help in improving body posture, coordination and agility while at the same time develop discipline and resilience. Dancers aim to achieve expressive quality of movement as well as body toning and secure muscle development.

The Syllabi:

  • Beginner Level (Pre-Primary & Primary for age 5-7)  Develop awareness of body parts, space, control, co-ordination, movement dynamics and perform expressively to depict a story
  • Graded Level (Grade 1 – 5 for age 7+) – Develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamental ballet technique in a range of sequences, line and spatial awareness and perform with accurate musicality combined with expression and communication
  • Higher Level (Grade 6 – 8 for age 11+) – Develop secure posture and correct weight placement in more complex movements, line through the body, accurate alignment and space, controlled elevation and perform with sensitive personal responsiveness to the musical mood
  • Vocational Level (Intermediate Foundation – Advanced 2 for age 12+) – Develop high level of technical proficiency and breadth of vocabulary, en pointe for females and acute sensitivity to rhythmical melody structures, texture and use of dynamic expression

Examination Board:
– Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), United Kingdom: 

RAD is one of the world’s most influential dance education and professional membership organisations. Founded in 1920, RAD set standards in UK for dance teaching, and currently have expanded into 85 countries, with 36 offices and over 14,000 members worldwide. RAD set global standards for exams in classical ballet – pre-level, graded and vocational, teacher training and continuing professional development for dance. RAD is also the longest-established and most recognised examination board for classical ballet in Singapore.


MODERN THEATRE

Modern Theatre is a rhythmic dance style which incorporate the style and technique of modern, jazz, lyrical and contemporary under one umbrella.

It uses big travelling steps, high extensions, leaps and strong turns which need strength, stamina, flexibility and great style. It is often seen on the stages of dance productions and is known for its theatrical qualities, e.g. Bob Fosse or Martha Graham’s work. 

Modern – is free form and a break-free from the strict classical ballet technique, with movements that origin from the core of the body, uses elements like contract and release, floor work, fall and recovery such as body drop, deep controlled movements, and improvisation.

The Syllabi:

  • Beginner Level (Primary for age 5-7) – Develop natural movement such as walking, running, jumping and skipping to encourage imaginative and rapid response, sense of line, coordinated movements and ability to express a feeling
  • Graded Level (Grade 1 – 6 for age 6+) – Develop technical accuracy with correct body placement, versatile range of movement, all-round strengths and abilities, sense of self-expression and creative improvisation
  • Vocational Level (Intermediate Foundation – Advanced 2 for age 12+) – Develop virtuosity in performance, awareness of audiences and self-expression, comprehensive technique in the styles of modern, jazz, lyrical and contemporary, as well as mature improvisation skills

Examination Board:
Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), United Kingdom:

The ISTD is a registered educational charity and membership association, and is one of the world’s leading dance examination boards with faculties from ballet to ballroom, theatre, dancesport and social dance. Since 1904, ISTD have provided training for dance teachers and examiners, enabling teachers to enter their students for examinations, develop new techniques, promote knowledge of dance and spread the joy of dance. Currently, ISTD has more than 7,500 members in over 50 countries throughout the world and holds 250,000 examinations each year.


JAZZ

_JAS0040Jazz is a highly energetic and showy dance style which combines rhythm, expression and technique. The term jazz is shared by a broad range of dance styles such as old school jazz, technical jazz, broadway, musical, lyrical jazz, street jazz or jazz funk. 

Jazz uses waves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. It incorporates dance techniques of ballet, modern and jazz. Great versatility and strong performance skills on the face and body is crucial to interpret the various jazz styles. 

Examination Board:
– Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing (CSTD), Australia: 

CSTD had its beginnings in 1933. It’s mission is to encourage the art of dance by offering a window of opportunity to experience and enjoy dance along with providing professional dance careers and choices. Examinations are held throughout Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The society aims to apply the four E’s that are the basis of the syllabi; Expression, Enjoyment, Encouragement and Education.

Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD), Australia: 

ATOD was founded in 1991 and proudly operates as a non-profit organization. ATODI (the International branch of ATOD) was formed in 2004 to manage its overseas endeavours. They now have members in Canada, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Norway, Belgium and the United Kingdom. ATOD aims to deliver quality, innovative training systems and services worldwide.


CONTEMPORARY

C1DX5680Contemporary is a style of expressive dance and adopts free movement, by combining elements of classical ballet and modern dance in an abstract, break-free, non-strict techniques and interpretative presentation.

Using various and simultaneous actions, it conveys emotions to the audience through body movements and deep breath to present an incredible and fluid performance.

Contemporary dance offers dancers the opportunity to be physically and emotionally challenged as new work often practice and encourage experimentation.


HIP HOP

Three hip hop dancersHip Hop is a popular and high energy freestyle dance, loved by youngster alike. It has revolved tremendously in the years creating many different new styles and moves. Dancers generally dance to various music like the hottest R&B, Pop and Hip Hop while incorporating hip hop dance techniques such isolations, waves, body rolls and high-impact moves.

There are many styles in Hip Hop such as locking, popping and breaking. Hip Hop allow dancers to move according to the pace and feel of a piece of music.
